June 16, 2000 As a result of an oil spill in the Chelsea Creek, the MWRA is providing assistance to state and federal officials who are monitoring the effects of the incident.
On June 8th, the 40,000-ton oil tanker Posavina was rammed by a tug, spilling 58,000 gallons of No. 6 fuel into the river. Despite prompt Coast Guard efforts to mitigate the spill, fuel oil has appeared in other parts of the harbor. The MWRA’s Environmental Quality Division has been asked by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to assist state and federal officials in trying to ascertain the impact of the spill on the harbor. As part of this effort, the MWRA will provide other officials with water quality and sediment data. The MWRA’s Central Lab has also been asked to test water by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The MWRA conducts regular water quality and sediment testing of parts of Boston Harbor.
