The New England Water Works Association has named the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority “Utility of the Year” at is 125th Annual Conference last night in Danvers.

The award recognizes MWRA’s massive upgrades to its water infrastructure, including the 17.6-mile MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel, the state-of-the-art John J. Carroll ozone water treatment plant and covered storage tanks throughout the district that will guarantee some of the best drinking water in the country for generations to come. This is the first year this award was given out.  MWRA was recognized in the large utility class.

In addition, Windsor Sung, MWRA’s Program Manager for Chemistry, received the 2006 Dexter Brackett Award, which recognizes the author of the most meritorious paper published in the previous year of the Journal of NEWWA.

Windsor’s paper dealt with the issue of balancing lead and disinfection by-product formation while using the Wachusett aqueduct and Wachusett temporary disinfection facility during start-up of MWRA’s new water facilities.

The New England Water Works Association is a not-for-profit organization. Established in 1882, the association is the leading authority on education, training opportunities, and public outreach to protect and improve drinking water and water utility operations.
